Using Your Loaf

Breads come in all shapes and sizes. They also contain a wide range of ingredients.

In this activity you will collect lots of information about the nutrients in different breads. Use a spreadsheet to analyse your information so you can make healthy choices.

Your Task

  • Set up a spreadsheet like the one shown below.
  • Use the nutrition information labels on bread packets to find out how much energy, protein, carbohydrate, sugars, fat, fibre and sodium there is in 100g of each loaf.
  • Add the information you have collected to your spreadsheet.

* Note: The ‘Sugars’ figures is already included in the ‘Carbohydrate’ figure, so doesn’t need to be added again when making the ‘TOTAL nutrient content’ calculation.

Questions
1. Which loaf would you choose if you were on a high fibre, low sodium diet?
2. Which loaf would you choose if you were on a high fibre, low fat diet?
3. What is the link between the amount of carbohydrate in a loaf and its energy content?
4. The total mass of nutrients per 100g never actually add up to 100g. Try and find out what the rest of the 100g is made up of.
