Diet Check
The table below shows a typical day’s menu for an 11-14 year old in the United Kingdom and in rural Uganda in Africa.

- Use a Dietary Analysis Programme to find out:
a) The nutritional content of each diet (make a copy of the results).
b) How the amount of each nutrient compares to the recommended daily intake for someone your age and gender.
- Write a report explaining which of the two diets you would you say is the most ‘healthy’. Here are some things for you to think about:
Which diet contains the most fat?
Which diet is most likely to contribute to heart disease in later life?
Do the diets provide enough energy?
Do the diets provide enough protein?
Why is protein important at this age?
Which diet provides the most dietary fibre?
What is the UK diet short of?
How could the UK diet be changed to improve it?
What is the Ugandan diet most short of?
How could the Ugandan diet be changed to improve it?
What other things do you need to think about when planning diets, apart from the nutritional content?
