Diet and Nutrition Key Questions

1. Many people choose particular foods because they want a healthy and nutritious diet. Try and think of five other things that affect the food that people eat.

2. When asked why we eat, a student says ‘to stay alive’. This answer is too simple. List four things that the body uses food for to help us stay alive.

3. Sometimes milk is called ‘the complete food’. No single food can keep you healthy forever. List the nutrients that are missing from the following foods: milk, beef, orange juice, peas.

4. About 3 to 5% of people in the UK are vegetarians.

a) What does being a vegetarian mean?
b) Name three different types of vegetarian.
c) Suggest three reasons why people become vegetarians.
d) What do vegetarians use to replace meat in their diet?

5. An increasing amount of nutritional information is being put onto food packaging. Give two reasons why this information is useful to people.

6. Different people have different nutritional needs. One thing that affects these needs is a person’s age. Suggest two other things that might affect the nutritional needs of a person.

7. Use nutritional tables to write a nutrition quiz for other students. Your quiz should have about ten questions and be in this format:

1. Which has the most fibre?
100g potato
100g chicken
100g egg

2. Which is not a source of vitamin C?
kiwi fruit
potato
pepperoni

8. Make a list of all the places you could find information to help people make choices about a healthy diet.

9. Below are some examples of quick meals. For each meal suggest one or two things that could be done to make it healthier.
a) thin crust cheese and tomato pizza
b) pasta with cream and ham sauce
c) cheeseburger and fries
d) fish and chips cooked in lard
