Design a Leaf

A leaf is made up of layers.

  • Cut out the boxes below.
  • Match up the description of the layer and its job.
  • Arrange the layers in the order that they are found on the leaf to make a table.
  • Make a key to label the layers in the diagram.

Layer of leaf

Description

Function

spongy layer

tall thin cells, tightly packed with a lot of chloroplasts which make the upper surface of the leaf dark green

allows oxygen and carbon dioxide to diffuse in and out of the leaf

upper epidermis

thin, flat cells and guard cells surrounding stomata (pores)

prevents moulds growing on the leaf surface and water vapour from escaping

waxy cuticle

rounded cells with air space in between and few chloroplasts

most photosynthesis takes place here

lower epidermis

waterproof layer of wax which makes the leaf shiny

oxygen and carbon dioxide can diffuse through the air spaces

palisade layer

thin flat cells

protective upper layer
