Green Plants

Activities

Teachers’ notes on activities

Activity 1: Green Plants Key Questions
This activity consists of a series of questions that could be used before, during, or after the video. Alternatively, the question sheet can be used as a stand alone sheet to review knowledge on ‘Green Plants’. Some of the questions can be used to stimulate discussion, others are better suited to a written answer, perhaps as a homework. Some of the questions can be answered by watching the programme. Others will require reference materials such as books, CD-ROMs or the web. Check the list of links for useful reference sources.

Activity 2: Greenfingers Greenhouses
This activity presents a set of data showing how light intensity and carbon dioxide concentration affect the rate of photosynthesis. Students are asked to use a spreadsheet to present the data. Microsoft Excel could be used but any spreadsheet package will do. Students will require some experience of formatting graphs.

Activity 3:Design a Leaf
Students can use information from the programme and background notes to learn about leaf structure.

Firstly, students reorganise information about the structure and function of different layers of the leaf. This could be done in pairs with one student holding all the descriptions of the layers and the second holding the functions. The cards are then put down one at a time and the two partners agree a match. Once all the information is matched, a table is created which can be pasted or copied out.

Activity 4: Tropical Treasure Chest
The tropical rainforest is famous for its diversity of plant and animal life. Students are asked to research a plant and its uses as individuals or in small groups. The list of internet links includes four useful websites. Encyclopaedias such as Microsoft Encarta also include useful sections. Reviewing the 3D graphic animation from the programme will reinforce the key points. The combined research work of a class can be shared as an exhibition or a series of spoken presentations.

Alternatively, the information can be used to annotate the line diagram. The diagram can be pasted in a notebook or on poster paper and all the information arranged to label the parts of the leaf. If a table has been made, the diagram can be labelled with the names of layers, or students can create a key.
