Delta Development

Answers to Activities

3. Tourism in the Delta – possible answers

1. Attractions
River trips, coastal resorts like Sulina, small delta towns like Gorgova, lakes for sailing and fishing, trips to rare environments including swamps, forests, reed-beds to watch wildlife, especially birds.

2. Getting there
Flights to Bucharest or Constanta (already used to tourism). Rail or coach to Tulcea or Galatzi (although Galatzi is slightly unattractive as a steel town).

3. Where to stay
Tulcea is a good option: it is well placed, large enough to have hotels and other facilities and linked by road or rail to cities with airports. Constanta, outside the delta, is worth considering as a base for day trips because its well set up for tourists and has beaches. Sulina, on the delta coast, might be developed into a new centre: small but could take limited numbers; it is on the coast and in the delta, and is unspoilt.

4. Getting around
River boats of every type and size, especially slow quiet ones which don't destroy the river banks, pollute the area, or frighten off the wildlife; coaches for long distances between towns; bicycles for local trips.

5. Where to advertise
Western Europe has wealthy tourists looking for new venues, especially companies involved in ‘eco-tourism’. France has cultural links – lots of older Romanians speak French; Germany has wealth, a strong tradition of tourism and can also reach Romania by road. Other East European countries with easy access and a growing proportion of the population able to travel are: Ukraine, Moldova, and Russia. The USA sends tourists everywhere and there are Romanian migrants in the USA: they could be targeted via the Internet.

6. Services
Hotels, cafes, entertainment, sporting activities (fishing, wind surfing, yachting, wildlife safaris, fishing, beach facilities), transport of every type, town and village tours, painting holidays etc.

7. Planning and protection
Limit the number of places to develop, build in local materials and styles (no glass, concrete skyscraper hotels etc), screen all new buildings and roads, limit the number of new roads and rail links, keep airports away, or just build one and keep it on the edge of the delta eg at Galatzi, have strict speed limits, noise limits and visitor number limits in sensitive areas to preserve environments and wildlife.
