3. Tourism in the Delta

The attraction of the Delta is its natural, unspoilt beauty. How do you build up tourism without wrecking that beauty?

You are the director of the Danube Delta Tourist Board. Your job is to get up to 500,000 tourists a year visiting the area and staying for an average of one week. You also have to think up as many ways as possible for these tourists to spend their money to create jobs for local people. At the same time, wildlife and the scenery must be protected.

  • Devise a plan with the rest of the Board. Draw up solutions to:

1. Which attractions to visit
2. How to reach the region – air/rail/road/ship
3. Where to stay
4. How to get around when you’re there
5. Which countries to advertise in
6. What services to provide (cafés/gift shops etc)
7. What conditions to apply to any:
  (a) buildings
  (b) roads/airports/waterway developments
8. Other conditions to protect the environment and its wildlife
