Use the outline map below, an atlas, and the information in the Background Information section of these net notes to build up your knowledge.

a) Locate Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Warsaw and Bonn, choosing from sites 1–5.
b) Shade in the area previously called East Germany.
c) Locate the countries of Poland, the Czech Republic, France, Germany in 1991, and Belarus, choosing from boxes 6–10.
d) (i) Shade the area which Germany covered when Berlin became capital of the whole country in 1871.
   (ii) Which present day countries were partly or entirely part of Germany at that time?
