Scotland
The programmes meet the requirements of the 5-14 Environmental Studies Social Subjects - People in the past and Guidelines for Scotland - in terms of the key strands of:

  • People, events and societies of significance in the past. This is a vital period in Scottish history in terms of political, religious, social and economic change.
  • Change and continuity, cause and effect. Throughout each programme James remains King, but his circumstances change. There are clear reasons for his circumstances and clear consequences follow from his experiences.
  • Time and historical sequence. Each programme deals with a particular point in James' life allowing for a progressive build-up of dates within two centuries.
  • The nature of historical evidence. The programmes provide evidence of the buildings and social conditions of the time.

The programmes will best suit levels C to E.

England
James' rule in England includes such events as the Gunpowder Plot, the Plantation of Ulster, the development of colonies and the creation of the Authorised Version of the Bible. It is, therefore, a period of real importance in English history as well as being of significance in the development of the concept of Britain. It is a period that fits the Key Stage 3 unit 'Britain 1500-1750, crowns, parliaments and people'. The programmes will facilitate the development of the skills of:

  • chronological understanding
  • knowledge and understanding of events, people and changes
  • historical enquiry
  • organisation and communication
  • historical interpretation

Northern Ireland
The programmes have little direct relevance for Northern Ireland. James did influence the settlement of Protestants in Northern Ireland, but this is not directly dealt with in the programmes.

Wales
The programmes fit the requirements of the Key Stage 2 unit 'Life in Wales and Britain in Tudor or Stuart Times' and the Key Stage 3 unit 'Wales and Britain in the Early Modern World 1500-1700'. James' accession to the English crown gave him control over Wales, too. The programmes will facilitate the development of the skills of:

  • chronological understanding
  • historical knowledge and understanding
  • interpretations of history
  • historical enquiry
  • organisation and communication
