Introduction

Welcome to the second set of programmes called Handmade, a twenty-part art and craft series for 5–14 year olds. Programmes 11–20 focus again on the work of ten craftspeople and artists at work. Each person demonstrates the highest skills in their own particular field ranging from a ballet-shoe maker in England to a Russian woodcarver of animated toys.

The Net Notes follow the same approach as those used to support programmes 1–10. They begin with a programme outline, followed by a short biography and interview with the craftsperson or artist. Teachers are then offered a series of suggestions for follow-up activities. A short history of the craft/art form is included, together with potential learning outcomes and appropriate curriculum links. Each set of notes finishes with a list of useful Internet site addresses and details of any further useful references for research.

Handmade represents a celebration of human achievement in the world of art and craft. It is hoped that the series will be an inspiration to young people, reaffirming the value of the contribution made to society by those who use their hands and minds to achieve the highest quality of workmanship in their specialist field.
