Programme 1 Outline

The Big Picture

What difference does it make to include disabled children in your school? Disabled children, their parents and teachers explain the advantages. How inclusion gives disabled children an equal chance in life, how they contribute positively to the school and how the inclusion of disabled pupils enriches the community. The programme looks at valuing diversity and at how schools can be developed to support the participation and learning of all children.

The programme examines inclusion and reveals it is not only about making the physical environment accessible but also about developing sensory and communication support systems. Inclusion is seen to be about addressing existing attitudes and prejudices, and also to be an opportunity for schools to redevelop policies on support for all children to participate and learn.

The worries and reservations which teachers have about including disabled children are considered, together with observations from non-disabled children. Other areas highlighted are children with difficult behaviour patterns, support and behaviour policies to aid the class teacher, circle time, Circle of Friends, socialisation and support networks.
