Programme Outline

The programme opens with some personal statements from each of the five heads, with images of their schools and brief introductions.

From this point onwards, the interviews are organised into sections which focus on the following themes:

  • 'Getting There' explores the journey each of the headteachers took to arrive at their present role.
  • 'Being a Headteacher' is an opportunity for personal reflections on different experience of headship.
  • 'Being Effective' invites each head to identify the essential qualities, abilities and skills a headteacher needs.
  • 'Management or Leadership?' extends this discussion further by exploring the balance between the two.
  • 'A Vision for Learning' focuses on developing a learning culture and raising achievement in schools.
  • 'Pressures, Challenges and Satisfactions' explores personal perspectives on the pressures, challenges and satisfactions of headship.
