End of the Cold War

Activities

Activity 1

Imagine it is 10 years from now. The Berlin Wall will be long gone and few people in Britain will know much about it. As a result, they will not know what its fall was an important event! Use the Background Information, the programme and the recommended web sites to write a short definition of the Berlin Wall for a Dictionary of World History. You should mention:

  • When the Wall was built
  • Why it was built
  • Why it was controversial
  • Why it was a symbol of the Cold War
  • The victims of the Wall
  • How it came down.

Activity 2

Use the programme and the Internet resources to research and write a short essay. Your title is:

The Fall of the Berlin Wall: A Double Edged Sword?

What this means is that although many were celebrating the collapse of the Wall and of Communism with it, others were concerned about what it would mean for Germany and the rest of Europe. You could organise your essay in sections:

  • Brief background on the Wall
  • A description of the fall of the Berlin Wall
  • Evidence that the fall of the Wall was a cause of celebration
  • Evidence that the fall of the Wall led to concern.
