Treaty of Versailles

Activities

Activity 1: Profiles of the Peacemakers

Watch the programme carefully and read through the background information and the web sites. Produce a profile of each of the key figures at the Versailles Peace Conference. You should look at their ideas and views about the Peace, and their attitudes to Germany.

Activity 2: Analysis of the Peacemakers

Choose one of the leaders you have profiled. Add an extra section to your profile which comments on the actions of the Peacemaker you have chosen. Your comment could be expressed as though you were a journalist of the time, or a modern historian looking back with the benefit of hindsight.

Activity 3: The Press and the Peace

Produce your own version of What The Papers Said, using the material in the Resources page, the Internet sites and any other resources you may have. Your aim is to write a script for a 5 minute programme, set in the Summer of 1919, after the Treaty has been signed. The title of your programme is "Lloyd George’s dilemma". Your programme should cover the following issues:

  • What Lloyd George wanted in the Treaty
  • What other leaders wanted
  • The different opinions being expressed in Britain before the Treaty
  • The different opinions being expressed in Britain after the Treaty
  • A conclusion on whether you think Lloyd George failed or did the best job possible in the circumstances.

Remember that all of your points (except the conclusion) have to be supported by newspaper extracts or some other evidence.
