Programme Outline
This programme covers all the developments in recorded sound over the last 125 years: Thomas Edison's phonograph, the foundation of the 'Gramophone Company' (now EMI), the advent of the portable record player, the development of the electric microphone and stereophonic sound. Howard Goodall also looks at the influence on composers of recordings from around the world and ends with recent trends in electro-acoustic music and digital sampling.
