There is a no shortage of material on the Internet relating to Gorbachev, especially if one looks at the sites which relate to Cold War issues and Soviet history. Their use needs careful consideration in terms of:
- the depth of information they contain
- the range of insights published in them
- the ability to communicate with experts and enthusiasts
- the ability to access original archive material
- the potential to use the sites as the basis of really stimulating and imaginative activities
The following sites are recommended because they meet at least some of the criteria listed above.
Mikhail Gorbachev’s Home Page
http://www.gci.ch/GreenCrossFamily/gorby/gorby.html
It is not exactly the Home Page of the man himself, but it is closely associated with him. The site is run by one of the numerous organisation Gorbachev is currently connected with. The site contains some interesting links and a collection of speeches.
Mikhail Gorbachev
http://www.cs.indiana.edu/hyplan/dmiguse/Russian/mgbio.html
This is a biography site with a short chronology of his career. The information about Gorbachev is fairly basic. There are also some links providing further information.
Creative Quotations from Mikhail Gorbachev
http://www.bemorecreative.com/one/1298.htm
This is a most unusual resource, but a revealing insight into Gorbachev’s radical thinking. It consists simply of a small collection of statements on a wide variety of issues.
Gorbachev’s Legacy
http://www.boston.com/globe/search/stories/nobel/1991/1991ai.html
This is a short and very accessible article from the US newspaper the Boston Globe. It sets out a very Western view on Gorbachev and should complement the TV programme and the activities well.
