Activities

Suggested activities using the programme and the recommended websites:

Activity 1: Ho Chi Minh — A Vietnamese American view

Work in pairs or small groups. Go to the website Why I Hate Ho Chi Minh. Your task is to write a 50 word review of this web page. You need to:

  • Summarise why the memorial to Ho caused such controversy
  • Summarise the author’s feelings towards Ho
  • Comment on the views expressed by the author

Activity 2: Why did the USA lose the Vietnam War?

The victories of Ho and the Vietcong were remarkable, given the strength and power of their opponents. Use the programme, these notes and the recommended sites to investigate which of these factors were the most important in the defeat of the USA:

  • Ho’s leadership
  • Vietcong tactics
  • American tactics
  • Public opinion in the USA
  • The media

Activity 3: Ho Chi Minh — Hero or Villain?

To the people of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh was almost universally seen as a hero. To the people of France, the USA, Australia and the other countries which fought in the Vietnam War he was almost universally a villain. Your task is to write a short article for a newspaper in 1969 (soon after Ho’s death). Your aim is to explain why Ho is both a hero and a villain at the same time. Your article will need:

  • An image of Ho and at least one other image from this website or others
  • A brief biography of Ho
  • An explanation of why Ho fought the French
  • An explanation of why Ho led his people into further wars in Vietnam
  • An explanation of his choice of tactics
  • An explanation of why the Western powers are so opposed to his ideas.

You may wish to set your article at a later time and make it a web-based article.
