Rough for Theatre 1

Background >

Beckett began writing this theatrical sketch in French, during the late 1950s, based on an earlier piece that he had written in English entitled 'The Gloaming.' Beckett returned to the text in the late 1970s, rewriting it in French and English versions.

The play was first published as 'Fragment de Theatre' in Minuit 8, March 1974. It was first published in English translation in 'Ends and Odds' by Grove Press, New York, in 1976.

The present Beckett on Film production was recorded in Dublin, in June 2000.
