A Piece of Monologue

Background >

Beckett wrote the dramatic monologue A Piece of Monologue in English, in 1979. It was written specially for actor David Warrilow who directed and performed the piece at the Annex at La Mama E.T.C., New York, in December 1979. In reviewing the performance, American theatre critic Mel Gussow noted, "With his bony, Giacometti-like form and his eloquent voice, Mr Warrilow…is a quintessential Beckett actor," New York Times, 19 December 1979.

The play was originally published in the 1979 summer edition of The Kenyon Review (New Series, 1, iii). Faber and Faber (London) first published the work in 1982.

The present Beckett on Film production was recorded at the Ardmore Studios, Ireland, in May 2000.
