Alexander Herds Sheep

Programme Outline

Alex takes his sheepdog out into the fields to practise herding. The sheep are huddled together at one end of the pasture. Alex pushes his shepherd’s crook into the ground and plans his first move. His dog waits patiently by his side.

Alex uses a thin, semi-circular shepherd’s whistle to give instructions to the dog. The high-pitched whistles carry well over the hillside where the sheep live. Wherever Alex’s dog runs, the sheep run away from it. Alex practises placing his dog so that the sheep are guided through a gate.

Alex has worked with his dog ever since it was a puppy. Now the dog is very skilful in guiding the sheep. Alex and his dog herd the sheep into their pen and Alex ties the gate closed.
