Beckett was invited to write this one act play for performance at an academic symposium in Ohio State University, to celebrate the playwright’s 75th birthday. Written in 1980, it was first performed and published in 1981.

Several unpublished early draft manuscripts of ‘Ohio Impromptu’ are held in the Samuel Beckett Collection at The University of Reading, Berkshire, England.
