A song introduces the characters and the shop. Children are singing a clapping song outside the shop.

Sc 5/1: Ext Shop

Outside the shop Luis is busy writing on a menu board. The sign above the door now reads, ‘El café de Luis’. A single table is covered with a check tablecloth. Tía María is sitting at the table.

Luis:
Now La tienda de Luis is el café de Luis
La tienda de Luis es ahora el café de Luis.

I love my café.
Me encanta mi café.

I want to be a great cook, with a very famous café.
Quiero ser un gran cocinero. Con un café muy famoso.

Tía María:
But you can’t cook!
Pero Luis… Tu no cocinas.

Luis:
I’m a very good cook.
Soy un cocinero muy bueno.

Tía María:
Very well, what’s your speciality?
Muy bien. Cual es tu especialidad?

Luis:
I can make fantastic tortilla.
Puedo hacer una tortilla…

Signals with hands and lips that it will be ‘out of this world!’

Tía María:
Okay then, let’s see – make a tortilla.
Muy bien. Vamos a ver. Haz una tortilla.

Sc 5/2: Int Café

Luis is wearing a new apron emblazoned with the words ‘La Tienda de Luis’. María has a matching one. Luis collects up everything he deems necessary for a Spanish tortilla.

Luis:
I’m going to make a fantastic tortilla.
Voy a hacer una tortilla fantastica.

Luis:
Put the eggs in the bowl.
Pon los huevos en el bol.

He tries to crack the eggs, and makes a mess. María comes to his assistance. She tries to elbow him to the side.

Tía María:
No, no, no – not like that. Like this.
No, no, no asi. Asi.

Luis:
No, Aunt María. I’m the cook.
No Tia Maria, yo soy el cocinero.

Tía María: (mumbling)
Oh my God.
Dios mio.

Luis:
Now cut the onions.
Ahora picar la cebolla.

Luis:
Oh my eyes.
Mis ojos.

Tía María sniggers behind her book.

Luis:
Now for the potato. Cooked or raw?
Ahora las patatas. Hechas o crudas?

Tía María: (indignant)
Cooked or raw? Cooked, of course!

Luis is defiant.

Luis:
No, raw potatoes!

He takes the finished tortilla from the cooker.

Luis:
There we have the finished tortilla.

The children arrive. They are surprised to see a table and chairs outside.

María:
Look there is a table outside.

Yes it’s a café.
Sí, es un café.

Cristina:
I’m hungry, I’m very hungry.
Tengo hambre. Tengo mucha hambre.

María:
Let’s go inside.

The children go inside.

Sc 5/4 Int Shop

The children are inside the café, looking around at the latest changes.

Tía María:
Hello kids.
Hola chicos.

Children:
Hello
Hola.

Almudena:
Luis, what’s happened?
¿Luis, qué pasa?

Alberto:
Where’s the shop?
¿Dondé está la tienda?

Luis:
Now I want a café.
Ahora quiero un café.

Cristina:
I’m very hungry.
Tengo mucha hambre.

Luis:
Sit down.
Sentaos.

The children sit down.

Luis (to Maria):
You’re the waitress, take their orders.
Tu eres la camerera, toma nota.

María:
I’d like tortilla.
Yo quiero tortilla.

Tía María:
No, not tortilla, it’s not good. Would you like a sandwich?
No, tortilla no, no está buena.¿Quieres un bocadillo?

Maria and Luis bring the children their tortilla.

Luis:

The children get stuck in.

Almudena:

Luis comes over to join the children playing their game. He motions to them to put their heads together, as if they are in cahoots over something. They talk in hushed whispers, whilst Maria sweeps the pavement outside the café.

Maria:

Off she goes, leaving Luis to rub his hands in glee.

Sc. 5/12 INT. Café Birthday Party

All the children arrive with the party food and prepare the shop for the party. They set out tables, lay out the food and drink, blow up balloons.

Children: Hello.
Hola.

Luis:
Let’s have a look at the food.
Vamos a ver la cocina.

Alberto:
Here are the potato omelettes. Two potato omelettes.
Aqui estan las tortillas de patatas. Dos tortillas de patatas.

Mateo:

Maria returns from her shopping expedition empty handed and looking despondent.

What’s going on here?
¿Y aqui, qué pasa?

Luis:
Nothing.
Nada.

Luis:
No, don’t go inside, you can’t go inside.
No. No entre. No puedes entrar.

Tía María:
Why not?
¿Porqué?

Luis:
Because, because … we’re going to the children’s end-of-year party.
Porqué. Porqué vamos a ir a ver a los niños en la fiesta de fin de curso.

Sc 5/14: Ext: The end-of-year party

We see the whole school gathered in the sports ground. We see lots of games and competitions and hear the children competing.

The six children introduce Luis and María to their friends and to the teachers.

Alberto:
Luis, Tia María, here, here.
Luis, Tia Maria, aqui, aqui.

Mateo:
Chasco, this is Luis.
Chasco, éste es Luis.

Chasco:
Pleased to meet you.
Encantado.

Marcos:
He is very tall.
Es muy alto.

Chasco:
Yes, that’s true. He is very tall.

Tía María:

Alberto:

Luis: Now I have a surprise for Tia María.

She walks through the door to find the party set out waiting for her.

M: This is lovely.

She plants a wet kiss on his face.

Luis puts the cake down in front of her.

Almudena:
How old are you, Maria?
¿Cuántos años cumples Tía María?

One of the children tugs Tia María’s ear lobe.

María:
Ten, twenty, thirty, forty.
Diez, veinte, treinta, cuarenta.

Luis: Let’s sing now.
Ahora vamos a cantar.

They sing happy birthday. Maria is emotional.

Luis:
Let’s go to the fiesta this evening.
Vamos a la fiesta esta noche.

Tía María:
