We see Luis sweeping the floor and making last minute adjustments.
He talks to himself.

Today’s the big day.

He looks at the clock.
It strikes eight.

There is a pause and at last the clock strikes again.
Eight o'clock. Ocho.
It's time to open my shop.

Luis walking up and down outside the shop.
What a day!

I’m ready.

But where are my customers.

But no one pays any attention to the new shop.
He sees a group of about six children on their way to school.
Hello children! Good morning. How are you?

The children reply.

Luis: This is Luis' shop and I sell lots of things.

Luis has a sign in his hand, which he sticks up on the shop door.
Assistant required. Interviews today at twelve o’clock.
Se necesita ayudante. Entrevistas hoy a las doce.
Luis goes back inside.
The children crowd around. They read the sign and look at each other.
One of the three who are interested reads out the sign aloud.
Cristina: Assistant required.
Se necesita ayudante.
Almudena: Interviews today at twelve o’clock.

Alberto (looking at his watch): It's nearly nine o'clock.

Mateo: Quick! It’s late. Let’s go.

Luis puts his head through the door.
Luis: Bye.

Sc 1/3: Ext School
The bell goes for the start of the school day. The children line up and go into school.
Children playing in the playground. The caretaker calls to the children.
Come along. Come along.
Vamos. Vamos. Venga.
The six friends gather together.
Marcos: Hello!
¡Hola!
Alberto: How are you?
¿Qué tal?
Marcos: Good.
Bien.
Alberto: What's happening?
¿Qué pasa?
María: Nothing.

Cristina: You know the new shop?

Almudena: Luis' shop.

It's still quiet in the shop. The phone rings.
Luis (picking up the phone): Yes. Hello, this is Luis. This is Luis' shop.
Sí. Dígame. Soy Luis. Es la tienda de Luis.
(Intercut with Tía María on the phone at her house.)
Tía María: Hello!
¡Hola!
Luis: Who is this?
¿Quién es?
Tía María: It’s Aunt María.
Soy la Tía María.
Luis: Who?

Tía María: Your Aunt María.
Tu Tía María.
He puts his hand over the mouthpiece and makes a face.
Luis (looking at a photograph): Oh no! It's my aunt. She’s crazy!

Hello Aunt María! How are you?
¡Hola, Tía María! ¿Qué tal estás?
Tía María: Fine. I’m coming to visit you today.

Luis: What ?

There is an explosive noise from the other end of the line.

Luis puts the phone down.
Sc 1/5: Int A Train Station booking office
We see Tía María at different stages of her journey. She is a comic character – always dropping bits of luggage or bumping into people and things.
We see her at the ticket office.
Tía María: A ticket to Oviedo, please.
Un billete para Oviedo, por favor.
I am going to visit my nephew.
Voy a visitar a mi sobrino.
He is called Luis.

Ticket seller: Where Madam?
¿Dónde, señora?
Tía María: In Oviedo, in Asturias, in Spain. Please.

She starts to walk away.
Ticket seller: Madam! Your ticket!

Tía María runs up the steps onto the platform just in time for the train.

Luis looks at the clock.
Luis: Eleven o’clock.
Las once.
(Intercut with Tía María on the train.)
Sc 1/7: Int the shop: Interviews
We see the sign outside the shop window.
Almudena (voice over): Interviews today at twelve o’clock.
Entrevistas hoy a las doce.
There is a queue of three children outside the front door of the shop.
They have turned up for the interviews.
Fast cut montage: leaping from three different interviews.
Luis: Come in. Hello. Take a seat.
Adelante. Buenos días. Siéntate.
Luis: What's your name?

Almudena: Almudena.

We see Tía María on her journey looking out of the window.

Almudena: Hello my name is Almudena. My name is Almudena Portilla Fernandez. I live here in number three.

The interviews are over and all the children are gathered around Luis.
Luis: Please go to the station.

And come to the shop.

Children: OK.

Luis: OK? Good.
¿Vale? Muy bien.
Luis (showing the children a photo): This is my aunt.
Ésta es mi tía.
That’s my Aunt María.

She is coming today.
Llega hoy.
She arrives at four o'clock at the railway station at platform number five.

Flashback to Tía María on the phone:

Back to Luis and the kids.

Sc 1/11 Ext The train station
The clock shows 4 o'clock.
The children run into the entrance hall. We see them look around the platforms.
Mateo (with photo): Where is she?

Alberto shrugs.
Cristina: Where is she?

Almudena shrugs her shoulders.
Marcos: Where is she?
¿Dónde está?
Mateo: Excuse me, is the train late?
Perdone. ¿El tren llega tarde?
Ticket collector: What train?
¿Qué tren?
Cristina: The four o'clock train.
El tren de las cuatro.
Ticket collector: There isn’t a train at four.
No hay tren a las cuatro.
Alberto: Excuse me, where is platform number five?

Ticket collector: Over there.

We see Aunt María get off the train.
She goes over to the Ticket Collector.
Tía María: Excuse me, do you know where Luis’ shop is?
Perdone. ¿Sabe dónde está la tienda de Luis?
Ticket Collector: Luis’ shop. I don’t know.
La tienda de Luis. No sé.
Tía María: That nephew of mine!

Almudena: Luis’ information is wrong.

Cristina: She isn't here.

Luis is pacing up and down. He looks at the clock.
Luis: Where are they? Where are they?

Sc 1/16 : Another part of the railway station
The children catch sight of María. She is going up one escalator as they are going down. There is a mad chase. They catch up with her in the Entrance Hall.
Children: Hello! Hello Aunt María!

Tía María: Hello! I am Aunt María.
¡Hola! Yo soy la Tía María.
Cristina: We are friends of Luis.
Somos amigos de Luis.
She asks all the children their names.
Tía María: What’s your name?

Alberto: Alberto.

Tía María: And you?

Mateo: My name is Mateo.

She calls for a taxi. They all get into the taxi. It's a small taxi.

Children count numbers.

The taxi arrives. Luis is pacing up and down.
He makes a face.
María and Luis greet each other. They kiss on both cheeks.
Tía María: Hello.
¡Hola, Luis!
Luis: Hello.
¡Hola, Tía María!
There is much laughter as they kiss.
Tía María: So this is your shop?
¿Es ésta tu tienda?
Luis: Yes this is my new shop.
Sí, es mi tienda nueva.
The taxi driver hoots his horn.
Tía María: Please.
Por favor.
Tía María sends Luis to pay the taxi driver.
She reads the notice in the shop window.
Tía María: Assistant wanted.
Se necesita ayudante.
I am the assistant.
Yo soy la ayudante.
She tears down the notice and goes inside.
We see Luis pass over the money.
Luis: Goodbye.
Adiós.
Sc 1/19: Int The Shop
Tía María looks around.
She stands behind the counter and greets Luis.
Tía María: Hello. Good afternoon.
¡Hola! Buenas tardes.
Can I help you?
¿Puedo ayudarle?
What would you like?
¿Qué desea?
Luis is flabbergasted.
Luis: But auntie, this is my shop.
Pero, tía, ésta es mi tienda.
Tía María: I’m the assistant here.
Aquí yo soy la ayudante.

The clock shows it is 8 o'clock.
Tía María: Eight o'clock
Las ocho.
Alberto: Luis needs an assistant.
Luis necesita un ayudante.
Tía María: I am his assistant.
Yo soy su ayudante.
Cristina: How long will you be here?
¿Cuántos días vas a estar aquí?
