Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
Anywhere and everywhere – ‘being inspired’ is a state of mind and there is interesting visual material all around.
How long would it take to make a brooch of the type shown in the programme?
After lots of preparation and design development, it would take about a day of silversmithing to produce this piece.
Which is the most difficult process?
Soldering the catch components on the back so that the brooch sits correctly.
What are the advantages of using silver as a metal for jewellery?
It is very versatile especially for hand working.
What do you find the most satisfying aspect of your work?
The simple pleasure of making, capped by a good-looking exhibition or a satisfied customer.
What do you find least enjoyable?
The promotion of myself and my work.
Is all your work done at home?
I do have a work area at home but I rent a studio for large/noisy work.
For how long do you normally work each day?
A flexible 9-5 day.
Do you have a particular ambition for the future?
To make better work.
What qualities do you need to enjoy this work and be successful at it?
You need to be dextrous, patient, enjoy making, be happy working alone, self-disciplined, organized and creative (or just lucky!).
