Programme 1: Belzoni Strong Man on the Nile

Activities

After establishing the location of modern Egypt on a world map, the children can:

  • Find out the distance it is from England. Discuss how the Belzonis would have travelled there in the early 1800s.
  • Consider what it would have been like for Giovanni and his wife when they first arrived in Egypt (think about the weather, food, clothes, houses etc).
  • Begin a diary – as if written by Giovanni, Sarah or Burckhardt – about their exploits in Egypt to date.
  • Research how the Ancient Egyptians moved heavy objects in the desert. Compare these with the methods used by Belzoni. What would be used today to move such heavy pieces of stone?
