Ideas to Try
- Observe and discuss different scripts illustrated in the many calligraphy books now available – compare these with historical documents and texts, old birth certificates, deeds, wills etc.
- According to age and ability, encourage children to practise letter formation using different tools including broad-edged felt tips pens, calligraphy pens, brush and inks, pen and ink.
- Children could copy a favourite piece of poetry or present their own work using illuminated capitals and script of their own choice. Gold paint could be substituted for gold leaf. Since this will look more effective on plain paper, encourage the children to draw guidelines before starting.
- Where appropriate, allow children to explore the internet and experiment with online lessons in calligraphy.
- Compare how various types of paper respond to ink and to what purpose they may best be suited.
- If appropriate feathers are available, older children may enjoy creating a quill.
- Children will enjoy using other alphabets or hieroglyphics to write their own names.
