Christopher Austin - calligrapher
Biography
At the age of eight, Christopher became fascinated by words and the letters used to form them. From this love of words developed his major interest in reading and literature. He began to take a serious interest in calligraphy at about the age of 30 when, having written a children’s story, he felt inspired to make a handmade copy of it. Initially he studied at an evening class before taking a three-year full-time degree course at Roehampton University. His work covers a wide field: invitations, place-cards, certificates, family trees, memorial books, artifacts for films (props), historical reproductions, poems, banners, Orders of Service for weddings and funerals, posters, logo designs, typefaces … one of the main pleasures of his work lies in never knowing what challenges tomorrow may bring.
