Design Aid

Activities

Before viewing

Make a display of products and/or photographs of products such as:

  • toothbrushes
  • cups
  • torches
  • portable music players
  • protective gloves/gauntlets
  • glasses cases
Discuss with the class how the items would need to be redesigned to accommodate the needs of a particular disadvantaged group.
  • Make a display of items and/or photographs of items which have been designed with a specific need in mind, eg aprons for the surgeon, butcher, welder, fishmonger etc - discuss what makes them appropriate and how they could be improved.
  • Teach students to use an appropriate CAD package that enables design concepts to be professionally presented, eg TechSoft 2D Design, ProDesktop, SpeedStep.

After viewing

Discuss with the students key features/concepts of the programme in relation to:

  • how the designers developed their ideas and tackled the problems identified
  • the notion that effective/functional design can also be beautiful

Create a 'design and make' brief which uses a sound recording module. Available at appox £5 from the Design and Making Centre, (Tel: 01209 719354) or Rapid Electronics (Tel: 01206 751166). The brief
should encourage the students to design and make a 'new product' of their choice which satisfies a clear specification which relates to specific needs of the end user.

Give the 'in the bag' brief to your students. Arrange for a crime prevention officer to be involved in the final evaluations.

Divide your class into design teams consisting of four students who should first brainstorm and then redesign one of the following:

  • an alarm/lock for a bicycle
  • a tin opener
  • a glasses case
  • a lunch box for an eight year old
  • an egg box to hold six eggs
  • a 'sponge' bag to take on a camping trip

The design should be taken as far as a concept model or fist prototype.
