Programme Outline
0.00-2.25
James, now a young married man, dreams that witches are going to kill him. On waking, he tells his wife Anne of his special fear of the Earl of Bothwell, an enemy James believes to be a warlock. He'd imprisoned Bothwell, only for the Earl to escape and threaten the King's life in Edinburgh. James blames Bothwell for the storms that troubled his voyage back from Denmark with Anne.
2.25-4.00
James fears being murdered. He wears special clothes to repel an attacker's knife. He has these tested by allowing himself to be stabbed.
4.00-9.00
A woman accused of witchcraft is questioned by James and threatened with torture if she does not confess. Initially asserting her innocence, she breaks down from fear and agrees she met other witches in North Berwick and saw Bothwell there. James defends his belief in witches from Angel's questions. The woman who confessed is told she'll be burned to death.
9.00-14.00
Anne gives birth to a son, Henry, at Falkland Palace. James is delighted and hopes Henry won't be troubled by Protestant ministers questioning his divine right to be King. Angel tells us of Henry's early death, Bothwell's escape from Scotland and James' own authorship of a book on witchcraft.
