Whilst golfing with his goldsmith, James complains that although there's no war with England, Scotland lacks peace since Scots fight each other and he lacks the power to stop them.
2.30-4.40
James visits Claypotts Castle and learns how it has been designed to provide comfort as well as safety. James considers whether he should marry the Danish Princess, Anne.

Plague afflicts many of Scotland's dirty towns; we glimpse some of its victims.
6.20-9.30
Sir Robert Carey comes from England with news of Mary's death. The consequences are discussed both by the guard and a serving maid and by George Heriot (royal goldsmith) and the Reverend Aitken from Edinburgh. They wonder if there will be war.
9.30-14.00
James considers how to respond to the news. Sir Robert assures him that Elizabeth had no part in Mary's execution. James decides on peace and the prospect of inheriting the English crown.
