Kidnapped!

Programme Outline

0.00-1.30
It is 1582. James is a prisoner in Gowrie Castle. Lord Gowrie explains to the 16-year-old King that this is because James favours pro-French Catholics.

1.30-3.20
James summons Angel to complain of his plight. Angel calls up the past to remind James how he had favoured Esmé Stuart from France, a former Catholic.

3.20-7.30
James expresses his admiration for Esmé's accomplishments, justifies making him Duke of Lennox, and rejects Angel's warnings that Protestant lords are dangerous men, fearful of Catholic and French power in Scotland and aware that Stuart has already had Morton executed.

7.30-10.00
Despite his initial refusal, James has to sign an order banishing Stuart. Yet still the King is imprisoned, perhaps because he's old enough to rule his kingdom.

10.00-13.00
James recalls his travels, especially to see Sir George Bruce in Culross. Bruce has profited from coal mining, salt production and trade. His garden produces many vegetables and medicinal herbs.

13.00-14.00
Loyal men burst in and free James. The King declares Gowrie will be executed - which he was in 1584.
