The Boy King
Activities
Before viewing Pupils discuss with the teacher the following questions:
- Who is in charge of our country?
- Who tries to make sure that people can live peacefully?
Stress to pupils that they are now going to see how these problems were dealt with in Scotland over 400 years ago.
After viewing
- Pupils work in pairs, in role as royal servants, and talk about what they think about the young King James. They might feel sorry for him or envy him, in various ways.
- Pupils discuss what sort of sign Robert Tailor of Stirling would have had to hang outside his shop. They must remember that most people could not read or write. A bold and colourful sign was important. Pupils then make or draw such a sign.
- Pupils begin work on a provided outline map of Scotland. They find Stirling in an atlas and enter it on their map. They study the atlas to consider why the place Stirling occupies is so important for controlling Scotland.
- Pupils choose one of the following 'why' questions and write at least one sentence in answer to it:
a) Why did Queen Elizabeth of England keep James' mother Mary a prisoner? b) Why did James say 'I hate weapons'?
- Pupils access the website http://www.jesus-is-lord.com/kinginde.htm to find out two extra pieces of information about James' childhood.
