The Boy King

Programme Outline

0.00-2.20
It is 1575. James, a boy of nine and king in name only, plays football in Stirling Castle - to the annoyance of his tutor, George Buchanan. A pale young woman appears who helps James answer his tutor's questions. This is Angel. Only James can see and hear her.

2.20-2.40
James grumbles to Angel about being confined to the castle. She reminds him that life is dangerous and that he is fortunate compared to ordinary people whose lives are very hard.

2.40-4.45
James agrees that several of his regents have met violent ends. The current regent, Morton, questions Buchanan about James' studies and learns that James is studious and speaks several languages. James demonstrates his knowledge of Latin.

4.45-6.30
Morton discusses the bitter divisions in Scotland between Protestants and Catholics with James' governess, Lady Mar.

6.30-10.40
James is taught to play chess by Angel. They discuss how Protestant Scots expelled James' mother, Mary, from Scotland and how she is now the prisoner of Queen Elizabeth of England.

10.40-14.00
James is measured for new clothes.

14.00
James tries on his new clothes.
