The time that imprisons every person, between the birth cry and the dying of the light, signifies nothing. Pozzo earlier articulated the existential condition of human existence represented here when he observed that 'one day we were born, one day we shall die', and as he took his exit with:

They give birth astride of a grave, the light gleams an instant, then it's night once more.
