The Internet contains a wealth of sites dedicated to some aspects of the Cold War and the arms race. Some are of limited use, but a number are of great value to history teachers for the:
- depth of information they contain
- range of insights published in them
- ability to communicate with experts and enthusiasts
- ability to access original archive material
- potential to use the sites as the basis of really stimulating and imaginative activities
The following sites are recommended because they meet at least some of the criteria listed above.
Public Record Office Learning Curve

The Public Record Office exhibition dedicated to the Cold War will be online from July 2001. One of the six galleries is on the nuclear arms race. It contains a wealth of original source material and activity ideas.
Film Education

This site has a range of material to help students get the most from Hollywood movies. It includes a study guide on the feature film ‘Thirteen Days’ which is based on the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, and a study pack is available for teachers to order free of charge.

An extremely helpful reference resource with plenty of cross-referencing. Ideal for reference purposes or as an activity resource.
The USA and the Soviet Union

Part of the Library of Congress site on US history, this is characteristically comprehensive and thorough. It is easy to get lost in the wealth of material and online exhibitions, but getting lost in such a way is nonetheless rewarding!
Investigating the Vietnam War

Part of the Spartacus site, this contains a large number of links, useful articles and excellent primary source material on the Vietnam War, including the opportunity to communicate with Vietnam veterans.
