Diet and Nutrition

Aims

The programme and notes aim to provide information and resources to support work in the following areas:

  • the importance of a balanced diet to good health
  • the correct balance of nutrients that make up a healthy diet
  • the role that each nutrient plays in a balanced diet
  • the type of foods that are good sources of particular nutrients
  • the use of food labels to provide nutritional information

After viewing the programme and doing relevant follow-up work, pupils should be able to:

  • understand that a healthy diet consists of the correct balance of the seven main nutrients - carbohydrates, protein, fat, water, fibre, vitamins and minerals
  • appreciate that a poor diet during adolescence can lead to health problems in later life
  • state some good sources for each nutrient, e.g. fish is rich in protein, cereals are rich in carbohydrates and fibre
  • understand that carbohydrates and fats are used as fuel to keep us warm and active, that proteins are used for growth and repair, that vitamins and minerals are important for good health, that fibre is important for a healthy digestive system and that water is important for transporting materials around the body
  • understand that although some fat is important in their diet, too much fat is associated with heart disease
  • review their own diet and assess how healthy it is
  • suggest changes to their own diet to make it more healthy
