Art – children could be shown slides/photographs of a variety of prints, both classical and modern. The basic difference between relief and intaglio could be explained, where appropriate.

IT skills – older children could be asked to find out about other forms of printing, such as silk screen (for example Andy Warhol’s famous print series of Marilyn Monroe) or lithography (Goya, Toulouse-Lautrec, Marc Chagall) if appropriate to their age, ability and interest.

Language – children could be encouraged to produce short pieces of descriptive writing to accompany their ‘fish’ drawings – these will be more successful if they have access to real fish.

Music – while the children are drawing let them listen to ‘The Trout’ by Schubert or ‘La Mer’ by Debussy to show how composers respond to their subject.

Research: younger children might enjoy finding out specific information about the type of fish they have chosen to draw. Suggest they base their research on five or six questions, carefully selected in advance.
