Diane Barnes – lino cutter and printmaker

Interview

Who has inspired your work?

Originally my inspiration for linocuts came from my art teacher at school.

What particular skills are needed to become a specialist in this field?

Patience, good fine motor skills, concentration, a methodical approach and the ability to think backwards!

What do you particularly enjoy about printmaking?

The whole technical process is completely absorbing. I enjoy the unpredictability of the discipline and the opportunity for experimentation.

What is the most difficult aspect of the work?

Registration – making colour and effects work as you envisage them.

What do you mainly use as a source of ideas for your work?

My life! All my work is autobiographical.

For how long do you normally work each day?

Depending on the size of print 4-8 hours. Other work may take 6-10 hours.

Is there a particular piece of work you would like to make in the future?

My current theme is rust!
