Ideas To Try
1. Very young children could roll up beeswax sheets around a piece of wick to produce a candle.
2. The safest way for older children to experience candle making would be for them to create candles by dipping. Prepare wax of different colours in wax kettles – an economical method of doing this would be to melt down unwanted candles. Provide each child with a wick and demonstrate that by repeatedly dipping, cooling and re-dipping, a candle will eventually be produced. This alternative and traditional method is also used by Amanda in her workshop. Whether or not the children should be encouraged to decorate their candles in a similar way to that shown in the programme, will of course depend on their age and competence.
3. Children may enjoy the opportunity to produce individual light sculptures. They should create a structure using withies, newspaper rolls or cardboard tubes. Encourage them to choose simple shapes with a firm base, like a pyramid. The basic structure should be covered with irregular-shaped pieces of tissue stretched tightly and glued on to the framework with PVA glue. Place a low-watt light under the frame or, if safe and appropriate, a protected night light.

4. Following the theme of light, children always enjoy creating shadow puppets especially if they can put on a performance.
