Art – Comparison of styles in still-life paintings where pottery is included; drawing/painting still life in the classroom; tessellation patterns. See also Channel 4’s Eureka: History through Art programme on Greek pottery.

History – skills in interpreting the lessons of history through artefacts.

IT – research on Islamic patterns or on William Morris.

Language – ‘Ode on a Grecian Urn’ by Keats only suitable for above-average pupils in the older age range. Extension of vocabulary to include technical terms relating to pottery. Writing descriptive pieces on a chosen piece of pottery for varied audiences.

Mathematics – tessellation; practical experimentation.

Science – properties of clay and changes after various processes eg drying, firing, etc. Investigating soil samples to recognise different soil types.
