  • Understand the skills needed, and the rewards and difficulties experienced by a potter of Laurence McGowan’s calibre
  • Begin to appreciate the properties of clay and the potential of this medium
  • Appreciate the pleasure of producing a finished product
  • Recognise and appreciate Islamic patterns; understand the principle of tessellation
  • Research into alternative uses of clay – in medicines, confectionery, papermaking and electrical components, for example
  • Recognise that many materials change form when heated or cooled
  • Recognise that clay is a constituent of soil
