- Large-scale natural phenomena still present major challenges to modern science.
- Scientists need to be open-minded about the nature of the evidence that might provide clues to predicting natural phenomena.
- A detailed understanding of the underlying phenomena is a pre-condition of accurate prediction.
- Optimism and scepticism are equally important in scientific endeavour.
- Valuable insights into scientific phenomena come from many different cultures.
