A Sense of Disaster

Aims

To show how:

  • Large-scale natural phenomena still present major challenges to modern science.
  • Scientists need to be open-minded about the nature of the evidence that might provide clues to predicting natural phenomena.
  • A detailed understanding of the underlying phenomena is a pre-condition of accurate prediction.
  • Optimism and scepticism are equally important in scientific endeavour.
  • Valuable insights into scientific phenomena come from many different cultures.
