the large, flat area of water created when a river bursts its banks after heavy rain

meander

the loops and lazy curves formed by a river as it flows slowly across a flood plain

tributary

a stream or small river that joins a large river

mouth

the open area where a river flows into the sea

recreation

lots of recreational activities take place on rivers and reservoirs, such as fishing, canoeing and sailing

water treatment

the cleaning of water to make it safe for human consumption

sewage treatment

the processing of waste water that must occur before it is returned to the river
