Scotland

Higher Still

The programme focuses on Scottish Emigration as part of the Scottish Higher Still History topic (Intermediate 1 & 2) Immigrants and Exiles: Scotland 1830s-1930s.

It deals in particular with some of the reasons for emigration from both the Highlands and Lowlands, and the progress, impact and experience of emigration from Scotland to North America.

Along with Programme 5 (The Irish Are Coming!), the programme provides a useful introduction for Higher candidates studying the Special Topic Patterns of Migration: Scotland 1830s-1930s.

It should also be useful for the sections on Population Growth and Distribution in all three contexts of Standard Grade Unit I: Changing Life in Scotland and Britain.

5-14 People in the Past

In addition it may be of some use to schools studying aspects of the Clearances and emigration as part of the People in the Past component of 5-14 Environmental Studies.
