Learning Outcomes

 

As a result of working on this programme, pupils will understand and/or appreciate:

  • the economic and political background to the period of Union from 1695 to 1715
  • that some Scottish merchants and nobles hoped that a Union would strengthen Scotland's economy
  • that Protestants in Scotland and England hoped that Union would ensure that the Catholic Stuarts were kept off the throne
  • that Edinburgh in the Union period was a hotbed of corruption, espionage and political intrigue
  • the key articles of the Treaty of Union
  • the political process in Edinburgh and London which led to the United Kingdom
  • that the Union was unpopular with the vast majority of Scots and brought few immediate benefits to Scotland
  • that opinions in Scotland about the Union differed in 1707 and have continued to differ
