• to encourage understanding of the reasons why Scotland and England signed a Treaty of Union in 1707
• to demonstrate the range of sources which can be used to investigate this topic
• to outline the range of opinions and feelings which this topic aroused both in contemporaries and in subsequent generations of Scots
