As a result of working with this programme, pupils should have knowledge and understanding of:

  • why the death of Alexander III created a crisis for Scotland
  • the role played by Edward I of England
  • how and why Scotland's independence was threatened
  • the importance of John Balliol, William Wallace and Robert the Bruce in the story of the Wars of Independence
  • the historical debate about Robert the Bruce - Scottish hero or murdering opportunist?
  • why the Battle of Bannockburn and the Declaration of Arbroath are so important to Scottish identity and nationhood
