Programme Outline
The programme considers:
- feudal system — chess set — Carlingford
- food — now and then
- banquet — games and pastimes
The programme begins by explaining that the Normans did not succeed in conquering all of Ireland. In those areas which were under Norman control, society was ordered by the feudal system. This is explained.
Town life is studied in a visit to Carlingford which begins at one of the gates of the town — a ‘tolsend’, where taxes were collected on goods brought into the town. A guide takes us through the streets, describing the cramped conditions and the houses. The visit ends at Carlingford Castle which is used to introduce life inside castles. The importance of religion is highlighted. The programme looks at some of the pastimes of the rich, including chess, embroidery and hunting.
The Norman diet, for rich and poor, is examined, with many of the foods cooked and tasted, leading to a reconstruction of a Norman banquet.
