Programme Outline
The programme considers:
- Norman versus Irish soldiers
- Strongbow
- control of the Irish
Walter talks about the Norman expansion through England, Wales and Scotland, and how logically the next place for the Normans to conquer was Ireland. The programme describes Ireland in the twelfth century, before the Norman invasion. It reconstructs life on a crannog, dealing with clothes, food and homes. Religious life is described. Some of the reasons for the Norman invasion of Ireland are explored — for example, Dermot McMurrough and Strongbow.
The differences between Norman and Irish weapons and tactics are dealt with in depth, and battle scenes are reconstructed to provide pupils with a visual understanding of the fighting between the Irish and the Normans.
