Section 1 uses the events of 17 October 1999 at Loma Prieta to illustrate the properties and causes of earthquakes.

Section 2 provides definitions of the terms used in Section 1, and further information.

Section 3 consists of questions examining pupils' understanding of the information in the first two sections.
